Strawberry tree - Mustard

First of all we should explain what a strawberry tree actually is ... At least this tree was completely unknown to us until we emigrated to Portugal. Strawberry trees (Arbutus unedo) - called "Medronheiros" in Portugal - are native to the Mediterranean region. The evergreen, darkly leafy trees fruit and bloom at the same time - we harvest hard from October to January at the latest! The red fruits are somewhat reminiscent of strawberries, hence the German name. The ripe, red Medronhos taste very sweet, are a bit floury with many tiny seeds and contain a lot of vitamin C. In Portugal these fruits are mainly used to make schnapps - by the way, a very mild, coveted and expensive fun ...

We were very lucky with our country in terms of the extremely decorative and useful trees - our rich stock of old, high-yielding medronheiros allows us to use some of our harvest for our most unusual mustard creation in addition to the mandatory barrels with mash for schnapps for our liqueurs . We only harvest on our own land and only fully ripe fruits, which gives our mustard a sweet, fruity aroma.

The small kernels also make it something very special in terms of consistency. Just try it out and enjoy!
